Durga Puja: More Than a Festival, It Is the Emotion of Every Bengali Heart

Some festivals are celebrated. Some are remembered. And then there is Durga Puja, a feeling that lives inside every Bengali, no matter how far from home life takes them.

Maa Durga

There are some feelings that words can never fully express. For a Bengali, Durga Puja is one of them. It is not just a festival; it is a beautiful mixture of love, happiness, nostalgia, and the sadness of saying goodbye.
The excitement begins with Mahalaya. The familiar voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra, the sound of Mahishasuramardini, and the fragrance of shiuli flowers announce that Ma Durga is coming home. The blue autumn sky and the white kash phool make everything feel magical. Suddenly, childhood memories return, and the heart begins to count the days.

From Shashti to Navami, Bengal comes alive. The sound of the dhak fills the air, pandals glow with beautiful lights, and streets remain awake late into the night. We wear new clothes, visit pandals with friends, enjoy delicious food, and share bhog with strangers who somehow feel like family. Ashtami brings the devotion of pushpanjali, while Sandhi Puja reminds us of the goddess's extraordinary power. Every ritual carries its own beauty, and every moment becomes a memory.

But Durga Puja is not only about celebration. It is also about family, friendship, and the people who make our lives meaningful. It reminds us of childhood days, parents who worked hard to make us happy, and loved ones whose absence becomes especially painful during festivals.

Then comes Dashami, the day we must bid farewell to Ma. As the dhak plays and the idol begins its journey towards immersion, happiness slowly gives way to sadness. We know she will return next year, yet letting her go never feels easy.

Perhaps that is the magic of Durga Puja. It teaches us to celebrate every moment, cherish the people we love, and accept that beautiful things do not last forever.

For a Bengali, Ma Durga is more than a goddess. She is home, hope, childhood, and belonging.

Until next autumn, Ma. Asche bochhor abar hobe.

Because Durga Puja may end, but the emotion never does.
